The ladies of Lavish would like to introduce the “Female Feature” series, where we can showcase wonderful female talent and inspiring stories from Vancouver.
To celebrate the launch of our brand new website we wanted to offer our readers something special. This week we found a dynamic duo and are offering you not one but TWO sensational females.
This singing duo met in 2011 at a mutual friend’s karaoke party. With their shared passion for singing and music they immediately hit it off! They perform together as Solyce at local venues and one day dream that their singing will allow them to travel abroad. Both juggling full-time jobs and other extra-curricular activities they still manage to meet twice a week to rehearse on a regular basis.
“One day we hope we can travel abroad doing what we love!” – Solyce
Please introduce yourself.
A: Heyyyyy! I’m Anna! (girl with the long hair) Yup! that’s me!
P: Hi, my name is Pamela aka Pammy, Pamster, or Pampers.
How did you pick the name SOLYCE?
We liked the meaning of the original word “solace” which means to alleviate stress and bring comfort, which is what singing does for us.
When and why did you start singing?
A: I’ve always loved singing as a child but I was very shy. It wasn’t until I joined choir in high school that I broke out of my shell and discovered that I really enjoy performing live.
P: The first memory I have of me singing was when I was 2 years old. I would sing songs in front of my parents and their friends, and that is when I realized how much I loved to perform!
What kind of music do you enjoy performing the best?
A: I enjoy all types of music – from jazz, alternative rock, hip hop to dubstep, even a little country, but my main genre is acoustic.
P: I’m an r&b/hip hop girl by heart – 90s old school to be specific!
What famous singer/musician do you admire? Why?
A: To be honest, I get my inspiration from YouTube artists such as Boyce Avenue, Jayesslee, Jennifer Chung, Marie Digby (the list can go on…) because they showcase such raw talent which creates a more intimate connection. It’s what makes them very admirable.
P: I’m drawn to strong and powerful women. Growing up, my favorite female group was En Vogue (I loved the sound of their harmonies). Nowadays, I really appreciate the vocals of Christina Aguilera and Beyonce. But my true inspiration comes from Alicia Keys – I admire the fact that she plays the piano, has an amazing voice and I love the empowering messages of her songs.
What do you think about downloading music online?
We have mixed feelings about downloading music because from a musician’s perspective, it takes away their well-deserved earnings. On the flip side, downloading music is easily accessible and convenient for listeners.
How do you handle mistakes during a performance?
If one of us happens to make a mistake, we just back each other up and continue on with the show! We’re only human.
What is the biggest obstacle for SOLYCE?
Because there are two of us with our own individual tastes, our biggest challenge is finding cover songs which we can both agree on. However, we try to keep an open mind because appreciating different genres of music brings versatility to the table.
How do you balance music with other obligations – boyfriend, friends, work?
With anything that is important to you such as friends, family, work, etc., you have no choice but to juggle your priorities. Solyce is one of our main priorities so we make sure we put in the time and effort into rehearsing as much as possible. Our friends and family have been very supportive and understand that it can be time consuming. With that in mind, we both feel very blessed to be able to pursue what we love so we try our best to maintain a good balance in our lives.
Tell us about your next show and why we should be there.
We will be performing at Natasha’s birthday concert showcasing live r&b and hip hop acts in Vancouver. The concert will be on Friday, May 4th, 2012 at Gossip Nightclub. All proceeds will be donated to RichCity Idol, a singing competition for high school students in Richmond planned for students, by students.
*Make sure you “like” SOLYCE on Facebook so you can stay connected with our upcoming videos and performances!
How would someone LAVISH you on a first date?
Whisk us off in a jet plane to an exotic island far, far away…..Ha!! Just kidding.
Realistically, just be a true gentleman. Be respectful and genuine. Don’t forget to pay attention to the little things. Just relax, be yourself and have fun!!
